The Little Boy and the Little Bear
There was once a little boy who lived next door to a little bear, and they played with each other every day. They rode their bicycles together and learned how to fly kites together. Sometimes, they even stayed overnight at each other's houses. The little bear didn't stop talking about the fun he had at the little boy's house, and the little boy talked about the bear's house all the time.
At bedtime, he said that at Bear's house, they went fishing in the middle of the night. Whenever his bath was ready, the little boy would say that they didn't have to have a bath at Bear's house. Finally, his mother said that perhaps he should go and live at Bear's house and be a bear. So she helped him pack his bag and opened the door for him. But once the door was shut, the little boy didn't run next door as he usually did.
The Stonecutter
Kallu was a poor stonecutter. One day, it was hot, and Kallu did not feel like working. He put his pick-axe down and said that he wanted to be rich. Suddenly, an angel came down from heaven and told him that he would be rich. And so, Kallu became rich. He ate and drank all day. One day, he saw a king. Everybody bowed to him. Kallu said that money wasn't enough and that he wanted to be a king.
The angel came again and made him a king. Now, everybody bowed to him. Kallu was happy. One day, he was going around his country. The hot sun burnt him. Suddenly, Kallu shouted that he wanted to be the sun. The angel came again and turned Kallu into the sun. Kallu burnt everything. He burnt the faces of the kings. He burnt the faces of the rich and of the stonecutters who were cutting stones.
How animals protect themselves
We have all seen pictures of a lion killing a zebra or a tiger killing a deer. Animals that eat meat can live only if they kill and eat other animals. Bigger or stronger animals kill smaller or weaker ones. How then, can smaller and weaker animals take care of themselves? Some animals ran very fast. A kangaroo, for example, can move very fast when it is in danger. And a tiger cannot always catch a deer that is running away from it.
Small animals like the squirrel or the mouse hide in holes in trees or in the ground. Some animals that live near the sea have hard shells to cover their bodies. Turtles, for example, pull their heads under their shells when they are in danger. The little porcupine has sharp quills all over its body, and it sticks them out when it senses danger. That is why even the tiger is afraid of it.
